Investigate history and credit standing of individuals or business establishments applying for credit. Telephone or write to credit departments of business and service establishments to obtain information about applicant's credit standing.

No previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, a person can become a general office clerk even if he/she has never worked in an office before.

These occupations may require a high school diploma or GED certificate. Some may require a formal training course to obtain a license.

Employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few days to a few months of training. Usually, an experienced worker could show you how to do the job.

- Telephones subscriber to relay requested information or sends subscriber credit report.
- Obtains information from banks, credit bureaus, and other credit services and provides reciprocal information if requested.
- Examines city directories and public records to verify residence property ownership, bankruptcies, liens, arrest record, or unpaid taxes of applicant.
- Compiles and analyzes credit information gathered by investigation.
- Interviews credit applicant by telephone or in person to obtain financial and personal data for credit report.
- Contacts former employers and other acquaintances to verify references, employment, health history, and social behavior.
- Prepares reports of findings and recommendations, using typewriter or computer.
