Network Systems and Data Communications Analysts

Description
Analyze, design, test, and evaluate network systems, such as local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), Internet, intranet, and other data communications systems. Perform network modeling, analysis, and planning. Research and recommend network and data communications hardware and software. Includes telecommunications specialists who deal with the interfacing of computer and communications equipment. May supervise computer programmers.

Experience
A minimum of two to four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, an accountant must complete four years of college and work for several years in accounting to be considered qualified.

Education
Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not.

Training
Employees in these occupations usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training.

Tasks
  • Analyzes test data and recommends hardware or software for purchase.
  • Reads technical manuals and brochures to determine equipment that meets establishment requirements.
  • Identifies areas of operation that need upgraded equipment, such as modems, fiber-optic cables, and telephone wires.
  • Tests and evaluates hardware and software to determine efficiency, reliability, and compatibility with existing system.
  • Monitors system performance.
  • Develops and writes procedures for installation, use, and solving problems of communications hardware and software.
  • Conducts survey to determine user needs.
  • Trains users in use of equipment.
  • Assists users to identify and solve data communication problems.
  • Visits vendors to learn about available products or services.
